Innovating with Plastic ConstructionThe UK construction industry provides a tenth of the UK's gross domestic product, and employs 1.4 million people (source DTI web site http://www.dti.gov.uk/sectors_building.html). The UK Construction industry is under increasing pressure from both the Government and Consumers to achieve a more sustainable, more environmentally friendly and more innovative industry. The result being that existing methods and products are being tested and challenged in a way that hitherto had not previously occurred. Construction has traditionally been synonymous with conservative attitudes and a reluctance to change. However innovation is the watchword of UK construction the 21 st century. There are large research funds available for initiatives in areas of innovation and sustainability. One area where there is a growing perception that change is about to occur is in the use of plastic building products. Plastic products in areas such as drainage have been around for a long time, however more recently plastic kerbs and road plates (i.e. high strength plastic products) have been introduced into the market. New technologies mean that the concept of plastic as a “strong” material has now been recognised. Indeed some “experimental” plastic bridges have been built both in the USA and UK. The purpose of this web site is to identify existing plastic polymer products, research, opportunities and alliances in the area of construction industry. The website is essentially a database of appropriate web links. You will already find details of the existing plastic bridges and the existing research collaborative. We would encourage you to add links to products, projects or research, which you think, are relevant to the subject matter. Just click on add. We would welcome your input and suggestions as to how this web site could be developed further, just email: info@plasticbuild.com |
